Photocrati, the developers of a popular theme aimed at photographers, has acquired the NextGEN Gallery plugin from its original developer, Alex Rabe, and will continue development. NextGEN Gallery is one of the most popular plugins on the WordPress repository, with over 5.3 million downloads as of this writing.
On their site dedicated to the plugin, www.nextgen-gallery.com, they’ve outlined their plans for the year ahead, which include:
- improving NextGEN Gallery’s core functionality
- building stronger relationships within the NextGEN community
- developing a paid Pro version of the plugin with features over and above those included with the GPL version
Side note: Photocrati’s NextGEN site is running on the StudioPress Generate theme, which can also be seen on our Generate theme demo site. Generate’s clean layout with a prominent call to action is perfect for this kind of site.
Photocrati plans to keep NextGEN Gallery a GPL-compatible offering available in the WordPress plugin repository.
We’ve loved NextGEN Gallery for years, so here’s hoping that the Photocrati team can continue to build on the great plugin that Alex created.
